In 1885, the Canadian government sent 5,000
troops to suppress the followers of Louis Riel, leader of the
North-West Rebellion. Most of the newspapers wrote about the
eastern forces organized in Ontario, but it was a small force
of Alberta fighters, assembled by retired soldier Major General
Strange, who ended the rebellion. Strange sought out the Mountie
he respected most, Superintendent Sam Steele, to take command
of an advance unit that became known as "Steele's Scouts."
The Scouts' existence under their charismatic
leader now find their deserved place in Canadian folk history
in this colourful story that will fascinate anyone with an interest
in Canadian and NWMP history.
